Hebron University Participates in the Middle East Regional Colloquium on Legal Education

The Legal Clinic of Hebron University attended the first “Middle East Regional Colloquium on Clinical Legal Education: Developing Clinical Programs and Expanding Access to Justice”, that took place on 27 and 28 May 2012 in the Kink Husain Ben Talal Convention Center in the Dead Sea, Jordan. Dr. Mutaz Qafisheh, Professor of International Law and Director of the Hebron Legal Clinic, attended the meetings in the colloquium which was organized by Johns Hopkins University in the United States, in cooperation with the Global Alliance for Justice Education and Arab Universities Union. The colloquium aimed at generating interest in clinical legal education in the Arab World and at building the capacity of faculties of law to establish and develop new, or expand and enhance existing clinical programs.

 

In addition to Palestinian legal clinics, (Hebron University, Al-Quds, Al-Najah) and 25 legal clinics took part in the event. The United States, South Africa, France, Spain, Thailand, Poland, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon. At the end of the colloquium, the participants formed the Middle East and North Africa Legal Clinics Alliance (MENALCA) with the membership of 14 legal clinics from the Middle East as founding members. This Alliance will be part of the global clinical legal education movement which works on the national, regional and international cooperation and networking on educating law students and lawyers with the purpose of enhancing the rule of law, social justice and human rights worldwide.
