The College of Law participates in an International Conference in India
The College of Law of Hebron University participated in the 7th Worldwide Conference of the Global Alliance for Justice Education (GAJE), entitled “Advancing Justice Education through Global Commitments and Connections”, hosted by the OP Jindal Global University and the National Law University, Delhi, India, from 10 to 14 December 2013. The conference included 350 participants from 60 countries. The conference addressed a number of themes, including clinical legal education, role of law schools in promoting social justice, legal ethics and professional responsibility, human rights, and networking amongst legal clinics from various parts of the world.
Dr. Mutaz Qafisheh, Dean of Hebron University College of Law presented a paper on “Legal Clinics as Emerging Human Rights Actors at the National and Global Levels”, in collaboration with Professor Andrea Parra, Director Program of Equality and Social Inclusion at University of Los Andes Law School in Colombia. This session suggested that the potential for university legal clinics to advance human rights, at the micro/individual level, is unbound due to the fact that students in legal clinics come from most or all parts of any given country. If law students are well trained to act as social activists, they may forge a breakthrough with regard to the notion of human rights protection locally. Creating inter-clinical networks may, in turn, affect the global human rights protection system.
Dr. Qafisheh was hosted as a speaker in a public lecture for professors of law, governance and public policy, and international affairs of Jindal Global University organized in collaboration with the US Brandies University. He addressed the legal as well as political implications of Palestine membership in the United Nations based on his recently published book by Cambridge Scholars UK. He touched upon the issues of human rights, humanitarian law, international criminal law, refugee law in the context of the recognition of Palestine as a non-member State by the UN General Assembly.
Vice Chancellor of Jindal Global University and Dean of Law School, Professor Raj Kumar, expressed an interest to further cooperate with Hebron University, particularly in providing Master scholarships in the fields of law, public policy, and international relations.
