Roundtable Meeting for Palestinian and American Academics
Hebron University held a roundtable meeting on "The Role of the Universities in Enhancing Democracy and Civil Society" in the presence of writers and academics from a number of Palestinian and American universities.
Prof. Ahmad Atawneh, Hebron University President, opened the meeting that lasted for two days. He conveyed the greetings of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Nabil Al-Jabari, and praised the role of the meeting in promoting the concept of democracy among students in Palestinian universities, and urged to work to find a philosophy of education in Palestine that deepens the concept of democracy from early ages.
After that, Dr. Sami Adwan -meeting facilitator- talked about the right of citizens to live in a democratic environment that ensures giving rights to everyone, without exception. He considered democracy as a "daily practice of life."
The American writer Sondra Myers then spoke about the importance of "changing some existing laws" to create a society based on justice and democracy.
During the meeting, attendees exchanged views on how to instill values at Palestinian universities' students. They came out with many recommendations, such as, changing the curriculum and improving the capabilities of faculties in line with the goals of creating a generation able to accept the other and claim their legitimate rights.
