English Department at Hebron University participates in the 3rd International conference, Visions of Change: New Perspectives in Linguistics, Literature and Translation, Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt, 12th – 14th April 2016
Professor Ahmad Atawneh presented a paper in that conference under the title “The discourse of hate ideology against Arabs and Muslims after Paris attacks in the current Syria Crisis”. Data were collected from website sources reporting statements given by heads of states in Europe, US, Russia, Japan, China and the Arab countries besides Iran and ISIS. The analysis shows that the ideology of ISIS in its campaign against the West is very much like that of the ideology of the crusades coming to the holy land. Pope Urban II, in the first crusade of 1096 said: ““It is not a sin if you kill non-Christian and your past sins will be forgiven. The Deal was (if you go and fight in the Holy land you will be forgiven all your past sins and you will have a passport to heaven).” Of course many joined the first crusade to guarantee forgiving sins. ISIS is doing the same saying they are coming to conquer the West with the same ideology of crusades. So, the ideology of crusades is coming to life in the 21 century. At the official level, all world leaders including Arabs and Muslims denounced the attacks in Paris in the same manner as denunciation of crusades.
The difference in the statements of the Arabs and Europe is that Europe leaders and the US believe that the attacks were against those who love life by those who do not. Europe leaders emphasize their values which can defeat terrorism and did not blame Muslims or Arabs; while the Arabs did not mention values. They only mention denunciation and willingness to support by donating money.
The unofficial level shows hate against Arabs and Muslims and spread that hate to reach politicians. Green Wilders, A rising political star and popular MP in Holland says: ‘I don’t hate Muslims I hate Islam”. 'Islam is not a religion, it's an ideology, the ideology of a retarded culture. Green Wilders wants the 'fascist Koran' outlawed in Holland comparing it to Hitler’s “my struggle”. There are other university professors in the US who follow Wilder’s ideas. They likened pro-Palestinian movements to anti-Semitic hate.
At the linguistic level, the language of ISIS shows directness as a language of power; while the language of heads of states shows diplomatic mitigation emphasizing the power of their values and loving of life against terrorists who do not have such values and do not love life.
